BIG 2023 AIA Sandcastle Competition Event
The Big 2023 AIA Sandcastle Competition was held Saturday, August 12, 2023 on East Beach in Galveston, Texas. The AIA fundraising event is for AIA Houston and ArCH Foundation as well as one of the top five revenue-generating events for the City of Galveston. This year 48 competing teams had their eyes and shovels set on winning the prestigious Gold Bucket Award. Firms begin months in advance generating ideas for their sand project, developing designs, and assigning duties to their team members. Today, the teams – stretched along the beach front – will meticulously sculpt their piles of sand and work non-stop for five hours.
At this fun event which is organized by the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), teams of architects, designers, engineers, and contractors vye to win the prestigious ‘Golden Bucket’ award. The judging of the sand sculptures will be on the originality of concept, artistic execution, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site. By the end of the day, everyone will go home with memories of a great day at the beach filled with fun, sand, and lots of sun.
Many people brought their own picnic lunch to enjoy, but food and drinks were available at the East Beach Cantina or from the food trucks parked onsite. You may bring your own picnic, and consumption of alcohol is allowed in Apffel Park / East Beach.
Chairs, umbrellas, and cabanas were available for rent. Pets were welcome but your furry friends had to be on a leash.
The big 2023 AIA Sandcastle Competition offered sandcastle building lessons to all ages young and old alike from a pro between 11 am and 1 PM.
The Platinum sponsor for this event was 811 Know Before You Dig and Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees. Gold sponsors included Metzger Law Firm, Sherwin Williams, ACI Contracting Associates, Cobalt, and American Subcontracting Associates.
